Davos has been recognized as a mountain health resort for over 140 years. The health-giving history of Davos began in 1853, when German doctor Alexander Spengler arrived in the mountain-farming village, then with a population of 1,700. Spengler discovered the healing effects of the high-mountain climate and made Davos famous as a health resort.
It is primarily the beneficial climate at 1,560 metres above sea level that helps with the treatment of allergies and infectious diseases of the respiratory tracts and lungs.
The latest research has proved that the high-altitude location even stabilises the vegetative nervous system. Hormone production in the adrenal glands (cortisone) increases, as does the production of sexual hormones (testosterone).
