The Davos sledge is Switzerland's best-selling sledge. It is a piece of sports equipment for skimming over snow, the same as the rodel sledge. However, in contrast to the rodel, the Davos sledge has two metal-covered runners which are braced in between by solid wooden struts, keeping the runners perpendicular to the ground. The seat is made of wooden slats.
The Davos sledge is traditionally made from ash but cheaper beech-wood versions are also available. The sledges measure from 80 to 130 cm long and can carry one to three persons.
The sitting position on a Davos sledge is more upright than on a rodel. In contrast to the rodel, the «Davoser» is steered with the feet, by placing a foot on the snow on the inside of the runner to make a curve. The feet are also used for braking.
The «Davoser» is slower than a rodel and so more popular with easy sledgers than the more sporty kind. The wooden Grindelwald and Bergün sledges are two other Swiss models.
The Bergün sledge is essentially a Davos sledge fitted with a round wooden bumper at the front which acts as a deflector in the event of a collision.
The seating slats on a Grindelwald sledge are fixed under the cross braces. The seat is thus lower, reducing the risk of sliding off.
